Ali washed dishes after Mommy left, and I buried my face in his back. He asked what was the matter. Her comment about losing her friends and her time coming soon made me remember something she said long time ago. She wanted me to date and fall in love because she didn’t want to worry about me when she was gone. She still had a few weeks in her, but every day those days got shorter, and soon, they would run out. And when they did, I would need him like I never needed him before.

He had already lost his parents and understood that pain. But he had to go through it alone and wouldn’t wish that level of anguish on his worst enemy. Losing daddy was hard, but losing Mommy will be different. She was one of my best friends and had been there for literally everything. Her death will leave a gaping hole in my life, and not even Ali’s love could fill it. He was the sweetest sim I knew and said he’d be here for whatever I needed. I could yell at him, punch him (but not the face), woohoo his brains out…whatever I needed to feel better, he had me. I loved him so much!!

The rest of the day we chilled and wasted time until the countdown. We had several impromptu toasts. We even had one in the hallway upstairs—we were a few too many toasts in at that point, heh.

Billie came by unannounced in a mood. She wouldn’t say anything to me, but she was probably still not over finding out her baby daddy was married. She must have really liked him.

So we watched the pre-show together. Now and then I’d glance at her to see how she was. I saw her smirk once at a commercial. At least there was one moment that took her away.

The countdown excited her. Hopefully, the next year would bring her much happiness. Before she left, she thanked me for letting her be a third wheel. I told her it was no problem, and she was welcome anytime.

When she was out of sight, Ali pulled me close and said, “So, Mrs. Murillo…it’s the first day of a brand new year. What can I do for you?”

“Give me a baby…”
