Devonte invited me to the Romance Festival, and I did not want to go. At all. I didn’t want to see anyone related to my anger. But I was bored with nothing better to do. Besides, that tea was really nice. Maybe it would help calm me. Heh, maybe we’d end up back at my place to work out the rest of my anger. People assume we’re woohooing like freezer bunnies, anyway. We may as well make it true. Ugh. That angered me even more.

The tea helped neutralize me, and I was able to take in the sights and sounds of the festival. Devonte appeared to enjoy sitting next to me in silence. He and I don’t really talk. I used to blame him for not knowing me well, but now that I think about it, I haven’t really tried to get to know him either. Not really. We had a nice conversation the first time we ran into each other, but I asked all the questions. Does he think he knows me well enough? Or is he satisfied with not knowing me at all? I think, deep down, I want some reciprocity. I don’t want to be the only one trying to make this whatevership work. It could be he doesn’t know how to have a proper conversation. Or maybe underneath all that swag he’s just shy. Who knows. I think I’m kinda over him.

I noticed he wore a new shirt. He’s such a trendy dresser and always wears the latest of the latest. I’d never admit this to my mom, but I don’t know much about brands and don’t really care. As long as I look good, I don’t care who I’m wearing. But I do know Balmain. I think that’s the company that gave Mommy a huge deal long time ago and she turned it down. Celebrities wear that label. There’s no way Devonte could afford that shirt. Heck, not even his parents could afford it. So how did he end up with it? I thought it would be rude to ask straight up, so I just said it was nice. He thanked me and said it was another hook up from his second job. He got a lot of nice things from this so-called shipping and receiving business. They’re a little too generous. Before I could inquire further, he got up and said he was hungry and headed to the food stalls.

I had already eaten, so I didn’t get anything and joined him at a table. Out of nowhere, Laurant shows up with a plate of food. My body burned with embarrassment, as if I got caught stealing or something. The last thing I needed was for Laurant to see me with Devonte. Where could I hide?? I knew I shouldn’t have accepted this invitation!

He glared at me as he circled the table.

“Y’all mind if I join you?” he asked, sitting before either of us accepted.

For crying out loud! What the plum is going on??

Devonte and Laurant exchanged pleasantries, and I wanted to disappear.

“You two on a date or something?” Laurant asked.

Heh, or something.

“Nah. We just hanging out,” Devonte said.

“Cool. Cool cool cool.”

Somebody kill me!!
