Mommy broke away finally from Luca and joined me in the dining room. She looked dazed and had kind of a dopey smile. And the way she walked, it looked like her feet barely touched the ground. My cute little stinker completely intoxicated her.

His sibling tried to steal my joy, but I wouldn’t let it. I wanted to see Luca 2.0! I couldn’t wait for us to lock eyes and for him to smile and attempt to call me Mommy or whatever he wanted to name me. Waiting on him to spin out of his crib was like waiting on labor pains to begin. We were all on pins and needles, anticipating the transformation of our beloved son. I couldn’t take it anymore and told Mommy to grab Ali and meet me in the nursery.

Ali and Mommy sat, leaving me to do the honors. With a flash of light and colorful sparkles, my firstborn emerged, a little taller and more handsome than ever! All I could do was hold him. I was so happy I could cry! I loved the way his little body felt against mine. Something about seeing him as a toddler made motherhood very real, and I couldn’t wait to dive into that world and see if I had what it took.

I carried Luca into the hallway for a moment alone before Mommy kidnapped him. She is great, and I love her, but I wanted the first lesson he learned to come from me.

I put him down gently and stepped back a few paces, encouraging him to take a step. He was a bit wobbly and very unsure about what I asked him to do. His quivering lip begged me to pick him up and allow him to be carried everywhere. But I cheered him on and instilled him with confidence, telling him how much fun he’ll have if he could get over the fear of the first few steps.

And he did! He took one small step, and then another, and another! The look he gave once he realized he got the hang of walking almost sent me into a crying jag. His eyes gleamed with joy, and he looked so proud! Not more proud than me, though. I’ll always be his most rabid fan.
