Sometimes I let Shiloh go outside and run around for a while. She doesn’t cause trouble and usually doesn’t stay out long because she loves being right up under me, so I don’t worry about her being unleashed. But one day she was gone for a while, and I wondered what she’d gotten into. Then I heard her barking. I stepped outside to look for her and found her talking to Laurant! I guess he’s around so much she considers him a friend. My legs propelled my body forward, and I ran to him, shouting his name. It’s so annoying when my body does things I don’t tell it. I don’t know why I was so happy to see him. I just saw him the other day.

He likes the ocean, so he came to my neighborhood to walk and clear his head. Apparently he and Diamond can’t get on the same page about the baby. I felt guilty for feeling hopeful about the dissolution of their so-called relationship. He’s trying to be involved and get prepared, but she’s super independent and doesn’t give him a chance; that doesn’t bode well for their co-parenting relationship. She doesn’t tell him when her appointments are or when she goes to birthing classes. He tries to contribute financially for the baby’s needs, but her parents bought everything already.

I asked if he wanted company on his walk, but it was a really hot day and he was on his way home when Shiloh found him. I offered him water before he left, so he came home with me. Within minutes, Mommy showed up.

She knew Laurant, so I didn’t think about how it looked when he suddenly came out of the bathroom into our lively conversation, startling her badly.

I guess I could have told her he was there.

She looked at me, head cocked to the side, with that one eyebrow raised. I stared right back. I didn’t have anything to hide.

“Is this what we’re doing now? Hiding handsome friends in the bathroom? I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said, waggling her eyebrows.

Can’t take her anywhere!!

Like the gentlesim he is, Laurant said he was just leaving. He only came to get water, but my heart still sunk. I hoped he would stay a while, but Mommy showed up. She suggested he stay, and she’d go. They went back and forth, but of course Mommy won.

“I should have called first. I’m the one interrupting,” she said, winking at me.

I rolled my eyes at her.

She called me into the kitchen to give me a gift; it’s what she showed up unannounced to do. She’s not accepting as many clients now, so she takes classes at Britechester now and then to learn something fun and take up her time. Yesterday, she took a woodworking class and crafted a violin; she wanted me to have it.

How nice! I never played an instrument before, so I don’t know if I inherited Daddy’s talent. I always assumed his musical gene expressed itself in dance with me. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

“Have fun with your friend,” Mommy said.

I snorted. “But not too much, right?”

“Oh noooo. Have all the fun with this one.”

Can’t take her anywhere!
