3.265 Forty winks

I woke up in the dark, groggy and confused, wondering how long I’d been out. My intent was only to get a few minutes so I could last until everyone left, but judging by how quiet things were downstairs, it seemed I missed the entire thing. My dry mouth and empty stomach prompted me to get up, but the rapid kicking reminded me this baby was due in the next day or two and he had nowhere to sleep. The only place he could go was in the upstairs guest room, so I trudged down the hall to check it out. A few moments later, Sophia found me in there and sat with me.

“Hey! Where’d you go?” she asked.

“I only meant to lie down a few minutes.”

She nodded, knowingly.

“We’re gonna have to turn this room into a nursery,” I said.

“Oh…right,” she said, peering around the room as it never crossed her mind either. “We can worry about that tomorrow. It’s late.”

“But I’m all energized now,” I said.

“Don’t you dare do anything crazy! You’re pregnant, remember? I’m going to bed. No heavy lifting!”

I snickered at her little bossy attitude. She always kept me in check.

“Sophia, the only thing I plan to lift is this phone to my ear. I’m gonna call the contractors and get them back here tomorrow.”

“Oh! Well, that’s a great idea.” She kissed me on the cheek. “My warning still stands. Don’t do anything crazy.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She left, and I went downstairs to eat, seeing as I missed lunch and dinner. I called the contractors and explained we needed to modify one of the rooms, and they said they’d be out first thing in the morning. When I hung up, my third trimester belly popped out like one of Desi’s baby toys. Is it just me or is this baby growing really fast??
