The Tea Finale
Nadia stared at her like a foreigner trying to piece her words together. “Wow. I didn’t know you were so tormented. That’s why you keep everything so close to the vest.”
“Pretty much”
Responsibility, compassion, good manners, and politeness were blessings and curses. Lately, they felt more like a curse. Like being trapped inside her own body screaming to get out.
“But, sometimes, I do want to say exactly what’s on my mind without caring what people will do. That’s a great thing about Nick. He doesn’t look at me like a freak or trip when we disagree. He understands sarcasm! I can be myself around him.”
“Oooooh, Mel! You sound like you’re in love!”
“Nah, I don’t know about all that.”
Nadia swatted at her. “Girl, you don’t know anything! Last time we talked about this, you couldn’t even admit y’all left the friend zone!”
Melany laughed. “You’re a mess, Nadia.”
“Speaking of messes…”
The infectious smile drained from her face so quickly, Melany almost forgot it existed. It scared her.
“You need to get on the pill. Immediately.”
WHOA! How did they go from gushing over a first kiss to “the talk??” Heat rushed to her cheeks like a volcano preparing to erupt. If only her skin weren’t so fair. “Wha… But… We aren’t… I mean, I don’t think-”
“Listen to me, Missy. You‘re really young, but you’re still a grown woman! Soon, you’re gonna want to do more than just make out, and you need to be prepared. I don’t want you bringing any babies over here before you’re ready. And, I don’t want your daddy in jail for the rest of his life!”
